Abidemi Asunmo Emerges as 10th CeBIH Chairman, Becomes Third Woman to Lead Council

The Group Head of e-Business and Transaction Banking at Premium Trust Bank, Abidemi Asunmo, has been elected the 10th chairman of the Committee of e-Business Industry Heads (CeBIH).

Asunmo was sworn in on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, alongside a newly constituted executive committee following the organisation’s annual election and swearing-in ceremony in Lagos.

Her appointment comes as women continue to take on senior roles across Nigeria’s banking and financial technology sectors, including digital banking, payments, technology and financial services.

Asunmo’s tenure also begins at a time of rapid change in Nigeria’s digital financial ecosystem, with digital payments, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, open banking and financial inclusion among the issues shaping the industry’s priorities.

A key focus of her administration will be supporting the implementation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Payment System Vision 2028 (PSV 2028), which covers areas including financial inclusion, digital payments, open banking, cybersecurity and regulatory efficiency.

Speaking after her election, Asunmo said CeBIH would work with regulators and other industry stakeholders to support the implementation of the vision and translate policy objectives into practical outcomes.

She also called for greater engagement with banking consumers, saying industry advocacy should extend beyond regulators and financial institutions to the wider Nigerian public.

“Our advocacy cannot stop with regulators and industry stakeholders; we must increasingly engage the Nigerian public—the ultimate beneficiaries of the financial ecosystem we are helping to build,” she said.

Her appointment highlights the growing presence of women in senior decision-making roles across Nigeria’s financial services industry, where leadership increasingly extends beyond traditional banking functions into technology, digital transformation, electronic payments, risk management and financial inclusion.

The significance of her role is also tied to the issues now facing the industry.

As digital financial services expand, senior leaders are increasingly required to navigate questions around technology adoption, consumer protection, cybersecurity, access and trust.

Asunmo has identified artificial intelligence as an important tool for improving banking services, including customer onboarding and the personalisation of financial products. She, however, stressed that technological innovation must remain anchored on trust, privacy, security and inclusion.

She also identified stronger digital identity infrastructure as important to expanding access to banking services and consumer credit, particularly for underserved populations.

Her administration is also expected to strengthen capacity-building through the CeBIH Academy and encourage greater data sharing among financial institutions as part of efforts to tackle electronic fraud.

Asunmo will be supported by a newly elected executive committee comprising Abednego Ugwueke as Vice-Chairman; Temitope Onibaniyi as Secretary, Industry Shared Services; Jimmy Banjoko as Secretary, Pricing and Revenue Assurance; Dr. Sunday Olaniyan as Secretary, OFIs and Fintech Relations; and Lanre Ogundare as Secretary, Emerging Payments and Technologies.

For women in banking, fintech and technology, Asunmo’s emergence adds another example of women taking on senior positions in a sector increasingly shaped by digital innovation.

Her appointment therefore represents both a leadership transition for CeBIH and a moment of increased visibility for women contributing to the direction of Nigeria’s financial services industry.
