Nancy Isime: The Many Lives of Nollywood’s Reigning Shape Shifter

There is a certain kind of celebrity profile that opens with a list of achievements and ends with whatever project the celebrity is currently promoting. Nancy Isime’s story is harder to tell that way because her career has taken so many turns that no single role quite explains who she is. She has been a model, television host, actress and businesswoman, while her life before fame has also shaped the person people now see on screen.

    From Ikorodu to the Screen

Nancy Isime was born on 17 December 1991 in Edo State, in the South-South region of Nigeria, to Nigerian parents of Esan descent. After completing her senior secondary education in Benin City, she began her higher education with a six-month basic course at the University of Port Harcourt before returning to Lagos, where she earned a diploma in Social Work from the University of Lagos. Even then, her future was far from settled. She had considered several completely different careers, including social work, piloting, geology and medicine, before eventually finding her way into the entertainment career she now describes as her destiny.

Isime also lost her mother when she was only five years old and was subsequently raised by her father, whom she has often described as a strict disciplinarian. The loss has remained an important part of the way she speaks about her childhood and the person she became.

Before the red carpets, television studios and film sets, Isime was working as an usher and a model, and those early years are among the most difficult parts of her story. She has spoken openly about the hardships she faced during that period, including the support she received from singer Yemi Alade. She began working at 17, taking ushering and modelling jobs across Lagos while her family lived in Ikorodu. Since getting home could become almost impossible when a shift ended late, she sometimes had nowhere to go after work. When co-workers could not accommodate her for the night, she would sleep on chairs pushed together or on the ground at the event venue until it was bright enough to travel back home. Looking back on that period, she has described the years between 17 and 19 as a constant struggle to find somewhere to sleep after late-night jobs. On some nights, she would instead attempt the journey back to Ikorodu at two or three in the morning, while her worried father called repeatedly to make sure she was safe.

Those years also had a serious effect on her mental health, something Isime has been very open about discussing. In a conversation with BBC Pidgin in 2021, she revealed that she suffered from depression and attempted suicide as a child, connecting those struggles to losing her mother at five and being forced to grow up faster than most children. As she later described it, working as an usher at 17 eventually led her into modelling, and she saved money with the hope of one day leaving Nigeria to work abroad.
