TikTok users in parts of Northern Nigeria are reporting continued difficulty accessing the platform, with some turning to virtual private networks (VPNs) to regain access.
Users in Kaduna, Kano and Sokoto have reported problems loading videos, refreshing their feeds and uploading content. Some users say they have been able to access TikTok after connecting through a VPN.
The access problems reportedly began around September 14 and have continued for nearly two weeks in some areas.
The disruption has also prompted speculation about whether TikTok is being deliberately restricted in the affected areas. However, there has been no public confirmation from Nigerian regulators, telecommunications operators or TikTok that an official block has been imposed.
The cause of the disruption remains unclear. Possible explanations raised in reports include technical problems, network-routing issues, traffic management or deliberate interference, although none has been established as the cause.
The fact that some users regain access through VPNs also does not, on its own, confirm that TikTok is being blocked by authorities or telecommunications providers.
TikTok remains widely used in Nigeria for entertainment, content creation and business promotion, making the continued access problems notable for the creators, businesses and other users who rely on the platform.
For now, users in affected parts of Northern Nigeria continue to report access difficulties as the cause of the disruption remains unconfirmed.
