6 Nollywood Characters We Still Haven’t Recovered From

Nollywood has given us some women we simply cannot forget. They were the kind of characters who could walk into a scene and completely take over the story, whether they were seducing men, terrorising a family or running an entire underworld. Some became so popular that their character names followed the actresses who played them long after the films and shows were over. Here are six we still haven’t recovered from.

    1. Karishika (Karishika)

If you grew up watching old Nollywood, you probably still remember the chant before you remember anything else: “Karishika, Karishika, Queen of Darkness.” Played by Becky Okorie in the 1996 horror classic, Karishika was sent from hell to earth to tempt people with money, sex and their deepest desires, all in a bid to win their souls. She could appear and disappear, take on different forms and leave a whole room feeling like something was seriously wrong. The character became so memorable that, decades later, one mention of “Karishika” is enough to bring back the horror, the soundtrack and the very specific fear that came with watching old Nollywood at night.

    2. Jenifa (Jenifa)

If Nneka made people suspicious of beautiful women, Jenifa had us laughing at a very different kind of woman. Funke Akindele introduced her in 2008 as a wide-eyed village girl determined to get into the Lagos big-girl lifestyle, even if it meant butchering English along the way. People loved her so much that she got her own spin-off, Jenifa’s Diary, which ran for years and became one of Nigeria’s most recognisable sitcoms. At this point, it is hard to think of Funke Akindele without Jenifa coming to mind.

    3. Mama G (Patience Ozokwor’s mother-in-law and stepmother roles)

While Jenifa gave us comedy, Patience Ozokwor gave us the kind of woman who could make an entire household nervous just by walking into a room. She made a career out of playing mothers-in-law and stepmothers who screamed at daughters-in-law, plotted against people who crossed them and turned family gatherings into disasters. Fans eventually gave her the name Mama G, short for “G for General,” and the name stuck so well that she even released music under it. Decades later, Mama G is still one of the first names that comes to mind when people talk about Nollywood’s most unforgettable villains.

    4. Alhaja Eniola Salami (King of Boys)

Nollywood eventually gave us another kind of intimidating woman, one who did not need to scream to make everyone in the room pay attention. Sola Sobowale played Alhaja Eniola Salami in King of Boys, a powerful businesswoman with one foot in Lagos’s underworld and the other in politics. She was intimidating without having to raise her voice, and Sobowale’s performance quickly became one of the most talked-about parts of the film. Even years later, her lines are still quoted whenever someone wants to channel that Eniola Salami energy.

    5. Toyin Tomato (Super Story: Oh Father, Oh Daughter!)

Of course, Eniola Salami was not Sola Sobowale’s first unforgettable character. Long before King of Boys, she was already known to many Nigerians as Toyin Tomato from Super Story. Toyin had one very clear interest: getting what she wanted, preferably if it came with money or status. The character became so popular that Toyin Tomato stuck as a nickname for Sobowale long after the show. For anyone who grew up watching Super Story, calling her Sola Sobowale still feels slightly strange.

    6. Sharon (Sharon Stone)

And then there was Genevieve Nnaji’s Sharon, the woman who seemed to have three men wrapped around her finger and absolutely no intention of choosing just one. She was confident, calculating and completely comfortable playing the game on her own terms. The character became so memorable that “Sharon Stone” is still used when describing a Nollywood woman who knows exactly how to keep men chasing her.
