Some debates just never die. They go quiet for a while, then Twitter wakes up on some random weekend and drags them right back into the conversation. This time, it was Nollywood’s turn, and the question taking over timelines was simple. Who are the real OG Big 3, the three women who truly defined what Nollywood’s golden era looked like?
Of course, nobody agreed. Within hours, people were throwing out every possible combination of Stella Damasus, Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Rita Dominic, Stephanie Okereke and Ini Edo, and everyone had at least one name they were very ready to defend. The funny thing is that nobody was really arguing about whether these women could act, because all six have more than earned their place in Nollywood history. The real argument was about timing, who was at the centre of Nollywood’s golden era, who came in while that era was already taking shape, and whether there is even a clear enough line between one generation and the next.
That is why, depending on who you asked, you could get a completely different answer to the same question.
1. Stella Damasus, Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde
This is the old-school answer, especially for people who remember the VHS and early DVD days, when seeing any of these three names on a movie cover was often enough to convince you that the film was worth watching. They were some of the faces people immediately associated with Nollywood at the time, which is why this combination still feels like the most obvious Big 3 to many fans.
2. Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Rita Dominic
Swap Stella for Rita and you get a different kind of argument, one that puts more weight on longevity and the ability to remain a major name as Nollywood changed. Rita came into the industry around the same period and built a career that has kept her firmly in the conversation for decades, so for some people, leaving her out of the Big 3 simply does not make sense.
3. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Stephanie Okereke
Then you have the people who put Stephanie Okereke in the mix, alongside Omotola and Genevieve. Stephanie was one of the biggest female stars of that period, with a career that stretched across some of Nollywood’s most defining years. For fans who remember just how visible she was during that era, leaving her out of the conversation feels just as questionable as leaving out any of the other major names.
4. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Ini Edo
Then there is the wildcard combination that brings Ini Edo into the conversation, and this is where things get interesting. Her inclusion raises the bigger question of whether Nollywood’s golden era should be treated as one fixed period or as a longer stretch that gradually moved into a new generation of stars. If you see it as the latter, then Ini has a strong case for making the list, even if she came into the spotlight after some of the women who defined the earliest wave.
