Bridal Couture Takes Over the Red Carpet at Mama Deola Wedding Story Premiere in Lagos

The red carpet turned into a full bridal runway in Lagos on Wednesday evening, as some of Nollywood’s leading women arrived at the premiere of A Mama Deola Wedding Story dressed to a creative “White Wedding Couture” brief, turning what was billed as a movie premiere into one of the season’s biggest fashion moments.

Guests were asked to come “ready to walk down the aisle,” and the turnout obliged, with dramatic white gowns, sculptural silhouettes and pearl heavy detailing dominating the arrivals. Osas Ighodaro was among the standout names of the night, breaking from the sea of white in a brown and white floral detailed gown with a dramatic long train that read as elegant and cinematic on camera. Hilda Baci, whose appearance widened the premiere’s reach beyond the usual Nollywood crowd, brought crossover star power in a sleek, sculpted look that stayed within the dress code while still feeling fresh and fashion forward.

Beauty entrepreneur Diiadem also turned heads on the carpet, embracing the bridal theme with a polished, camera ready look that added to the night’s growing list of standout arrivals, while Simi Dapson brought her own playful, fashion forward energy to the brief, making her one of the names fans kept circling back to online.

Toyin Abraham was named among the standout arrivals of the night, with fans online calling her “Mummy Ire” and “Alhaja” over how sophisticated her white bridal inspired look appeared. Veteran actress Kate Henshaw arrived in a white beaded dress with a contrasting bouquet, while Mercy Aigbe, Mo Bimpe, Bukky Wright, Shaffy Bello, Kie Kie and Omowunmi Dada rounded out a night of high fashion arrivals, each putting their own spin on the bridal brief.

The fashion spectacle accompanied the premiere of Folagbade Banks’ feature film debut, the first instalment in a planned movie franchise built around his popular comic character, Mama Deola. The film, directed by Femi Adebayo, follows a matriarch trying to fund her son’s dream wedding while contending with snobbish in laws and chaotic wedding events. Banks has said its central wedding scene, which involved more than 600 cast members and extras and was shot over roughly 20 continuous hours, is the largest wedding sequence ever staged in a Nollywood production. The film’s cast includes Shaffy Bello, Toyin Abraham, Bukky Wright, Erica Nlewedim, Omowunmi Dada, Rotimi Salami and veteran actress Idowu Phillips, popularly known as Mama Rainbow.

Following the Lagos premiere, the film is set to stream on Kava. But for many watching from the red carpet, the night’s real headline was the wardrobe, a lineup of the industry’s leading women turning a simple dress code brief into a full bridal fashion showcase.
