Mo Abudu Opens EbonyLife Place London, a New Hub for Black and African Cinema

Nigerian media entrepreneur Mo Abudu has officially opened EbonyLife Place London, a cinema and cultural centre focused on Black and African films, in south-west London.

Located near Nine Elms, the venue was unveiled at a ceremony on Thursday attended by London Mayor Sadiq Khan and other guests. Its opening coincides with the London Film Festival.

At the centre of the multi-storey venue is a 160-seat cinema auditorium that will host year-round screenings, primarily featuring Nollywood productions and other films exploring the Black experience. The programme will also include industry masterclasses, panel discussions and live performances by established and emerging creatives.

Beyond its cinema facilities, the venue houses a Nigerian restaurant, a bar, a lounge, a boutique featuring African and diaspora designers, and artwork from across the African diaspora.

Speaking at the launch, Abudu said the project grew out of a desire to create a space for stories that she felt had lacked a dedicated home. She also pointed to the limited number of venues serving Black cinema in the United Kingdom, emphasising the importance of representation on screen and in the spaces where films are shown.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who attended the opening, highlighted the city’s position in the global film industry and reiterated his commitment to investing in culture.

The London venue follows the launch of EbonyLife Place in Lagos in 2019. The new centre extends Abudu’s media business into the UK, bringing its focus on film and entertainment into a market where African cinema continues to seek wider distribution and exhibition opportunities.

The opening also raises a broader question about where African films are screened and how audiences in the diaspora access stories produced across the continent. While the new venue provides another dedicated space for such screenings, its longer-term significance will depend on its programming, audience reach and place within the UK’s wider cinema landscape.
