Tyla has launched a scholarship for female music students in South Africa and the United States. The That Girl Music Scholarship will award $5,000 each to 10 young women pursuing music or arts related degrees, with four of the awards reserved for students in her home country and six going to students near tour stops in the US.
The scholarship is named after “That Girl,” a single from her second studio album, A*POP, which was released in July. It is a partnership between Tyla, Sony Music and the Institute of International Education, and the news was first reported by Essence on October 13, 2026. The US recipients will be chosen from schools near tour stops in New York City, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Atlanta, Houston and Los Angeles, with priority given to historically Black colleges and universities.
Applicants must be 18 or older and enrolled full time as undergraduates in music or arts related programmes. South African applicants must be entering or currently enrolled at the time of the local concert. Each applicant is expected to submit a one page personal statement, a 30 second video, a school transcript and proof of financial need, and US applicants must also provide financial aid information. Reports say applications close on October 30, 2026.
Beyond the money, recipients will receive tickets to Tyla’s concert and a chance to meet her. The announcement came as her A*POP World Tour began its European leg in Paris, and the tour will return to South Africa for two homecoming performances in January 2027.
The coverage reviewed does not list the UK among the eligible countries. Even so, the announcement has drawn attention at home, where the inclusion of four South African students has been described as particularly significant
